The Nicene Creed is the foundational statement of belief for most Christian churches. To the casual reader, some of its assertions may seem difficult and, well, in-credible. 4th century Christians had a very different world view from that of our own post-modern generation. But suppose we were to express that world view as a ‘creed’; what would it read like? Lets contrast the Nicene with a secular, post modern world view.

4th Century Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit
was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.

For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and
is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic
and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism
for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to
the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

21st Century Creed

We believe in Big Bang,
Mother of the many worlds,
maker of fermions and bosons,
of all things visible and invisible.

We believe in the Standard Model,
particles begotten of Big Bang,
formed in the first three minutes,
matter from energy, light from light,
dark matter from dark energy,
condensed, not made,
consubstantial with the Big Bang;
through these all things were made.

Atoms and molecules formed,
then stars and galaxies,
and by ongoing cosmic processes,
Earth and the rest of our solar system;
then life evolved and, viola, man.

We suffer throughout our lives
from natural and human evil,
then we die and are buried/cremated,
gone forever
in accordance with Scientific Materialism.
Our minds are wiped clean and
our bodies decay into primal elements.
Soon we are forgotten.
Our lives have no transcendent meaning
and are ultimately erased by time.

We believe in evolution,
the Lord, the giver of life,
which proceeds from energy and matter,
which with energy and matter
is adored and glorified,
which is expressed in DNA.

We believe in a powerful, socialist,
centralized and democratic State.
We profess politically correct ideas,
we punish non-conformity and dissent.
We look forward to ecotastrophe and
the heat death of the universe. Amen.
